Thread: GRUB install fails

okay, i'm total ubuntu novice, apologize in advance if stupid question.

assembled two-cpu (16 core) amd system, 32 gb of ram. has 4 1tb drives. anyway, put ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit) on usb stick.

boots fine off usb key, when try install hard disk,

unable install grub in /dev/sda
executing 'grub-install/dev/sda' failed.
fatal error.

i've tried several times, , that's how ends.

doing wrong? need doing else, differently?

welcome forums.

have raid or lvm? or drives ever in raid set? can interfere grub.

have bios locks boot sector/mbr?
bios & disable "boot sector virus protection"
other bios settings - security or locked down boot sector, bitlocker

have installed , error install?
