Thread: Installing VNC on Ubuntu 10.10 Server

hi guys,

have been trying gnome , vnc installed on ubuntu 10.10 server 64 bit running on vps have no physical access (only ssh). have done on centos before (using guides found through google) cannot seem set in ubuntu.

first of all, have reasons needing *full* gui via vnc on vps. aware of security implications. said, have done before on centos, want machine use ubuntu need debian environment.

far, have clean installed, installed desktop environment by:

code:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
then have created sudoer user through installed vnc4server following instructions on http://usingnix.wordpress.com/2010/1...-ubuntu-10-10/

have tried variety of tweaks since closest have managed come connecting vnc grey vnc window (of correct geometry specified), black pattern x mouse pointer moves around.

know can't far off this, not getting gnome or software installed. using tightvnc on local ubuntu machine connect.

appreciated!
