Thread: Scheduled backup of entire primary hard drive

i have headless ubuntu server acting file server. has 2 hard drives - primary 500gb drive , added 1tb drive. 1tb drive partitioned 2, each having 500gb.

500gb - bootable disk - houses around 8 years of photos , movies. want primary 500gb drive 1 of partitions on 1tb disk. however, want method allow me restore main 500gb should happen it.

thinking of clonezilla perhaps, , saving image 1 of partitions on 1tb. however, mean have restart machine, boot via usb disk, etc. since machine on 24/7, hoping there way main drive without downtime.

others suggested dd, i'm not cron , i'm bit worried might nuke drive or files if fiddle it. also, i'm not sure if dd work while hard drive mounted (it's running main os).

i'm using ubuntu 10.10 , simplebackupsuite seems attractive. however, wiki (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ba...plebackupsuite) noted 48 open bugs hoping there other, more stable options.

perhaps use raid level 1 since have 2 drives-it writes mirrored data both drives , (according quick google search) seamlessly redirects requests data once in failed disk surviving mirror disk.
