hello everyone,

have old p4 desktop have been trying set file server in home. computer work used security cameras, , such, had pci card connecting cameras, , 3 500gb ide drives. @ work, began randomly restarting (it running windows xp). rather repair, boss going dump took home thinking isolate problem , fix it. seemed idea had been wanting old desktop use file server.

somehow, able format main drive , install ubuntu 10.10. these symptoms:

1. when starting cold, boot , run 5 minutes, freeze , reboot itself.
2. when rebooting after has warmed up, event takes place after reaching desktop.

have done isolate problem:

1. replaced graphics card (it had ati, replaced nvidia)
2. replaced cpu fan (not overheating issue)
3. tried live cd of hard drives disconnected (exact same issue occurred.), not hard drive problem
4. noted issue same both graphics cards
5. noted while in bios run fine long need (therefore not power supply issue)
6. running memtest 3 passes far , no errors (has 512mb memory)

computer has asus mb , american megatrends bios (from 2004). cannot find thing suggests cpu malfunction because boot , not overheating. have been able isolate these kinds of problems in past either graphic card failure, power supply failure or memory failue. seems none of these.

can kind soul hardware expertise suggest can try? not end of world if can't fix it, thought there still life in light duty.

a new cpu fan not rule out heat. verify cpu temps lmsensors:

can feel heat sink hand chipset. thermal paste may due replacement.

also, power supply may enough run bios, not system, suspect heat based on have listed.
