Feathering Illustrator image placed in InDesign

i'm using creative suite profession cs3.

i'm seeking advice on best way achieve outcome want do.

i've prepared illustrator map want place in indesign on top of background image (lots of blue , cloudy sky)  placed in indesign. want 4 edges of map fade image 'seamlessly' map stand out on top , clear when printed.

i keep map image in illustrator format if can because need go time time edits.

i have feathered frame of map (illustrator file) in indesign on sides not fading nicely background image. in places edges little unsightly , tinkering has not improved result much.

i can't see can feather image in illustrator. perhaps way achieve 'perfect' result save illustrator image photoshop file , feather liking in photoshop. or perhaps should open illustrator file in photoshop wouldn't stay as  vector file understand (better create photoshop file think).

i can see there various ways achieve result wondering how learned friends advise best way achieve result - illustrator photoshop file or whatever. if bit complicated or technical, might able point me key steps.

many thanks.

frank

you can create feathering effect in illustrator. feature has different name. it's called opacity mask.
