Thread: error partition doesn't exist

mitac 5033 laptop
installing ubuntu 10.04.2 live cd
4 gb hardisk
96m ram
clean install on formatted , cleaned down machine (done years ago else no details)

when rebooting hard disk...

while other things happening...

error partition doesn't exist!!!
after pause

error: no suitable mode found.
error: unknown command 'terminal'.
error: cannot allocate real mode pages.
error: need load kernel first.
failed boot both default , fallback entries.

press key continue...
(if key pressed later error messages repeated.)

replaced cmos battery , first got error message

cmos checksum not add
or - bios did not recognise hard disk, put old battery in , got original red error message , bios did work. put new battery in second time , cmos error message stopped, red error message came back.

have 3 partitions 1,2 , 5 see via live cd, not know next. tried mount file system using live cd , command line, following instructions forum. did using repair live cd, install environment none of 3 partition environments work (not sure if that's right terminology). on command line think involved hash key, typed mkdir ubuntu , see directory under command ls. not mount directory. not see directory command line typing dir /. have given on set of instructions.

i've tried plop boot manager, not understand it.

tried smart boot manager sbm.bin not floppy drive boot , not know how sort out partitioning or master boot record. know words , it.

think live cd has grub 1.98 on it.

welcome forum.

96m ram
are sure mean 96mb? not enough ubuntu gnome.

using live cd. mean live cd takes live ubuntu gui desktop, not alternate cd text installer? i'd surprised if live cd half boot 96mb ram.
