Thread: error partition doesn't exist

installing ubuntu 10.04.2 live cd
4 gb hardisk
96m ram
clean install on formatted , cleaned down machine (done years ago else no details)
when rebooting hard disk...
while other things happening...
after pauseerror partition doesn't exist!!!
(if key pressed later error messages repeated.)error: no suitable mode found.
error: unknown command 'terminal'.
error: cannot allocate real mode pages.
error: need load kernel first.
failed boot both default , fallback entries.
press key continue...
replaced cmos battery , first got error message
or - bios did not recognise hard disk, put old battery in , got original red error message , bios did work. put new battery in second time , cmos error message stopped, red error message came back.cmos checksum not add
have 3 partitions 1,2 , 5 see via live cd, not know next. tried mount file system using live cd , command line, following instructions forum. did using repair live cd, install environment none of 3 partition environments work (not sure if that's right terminology). on command line think involved hash key, typed mkdir ubuntu , see directory under command ls. not mount directory. not see directory command line typing dir /. have given on set of instructions.
i've tried plop boot manager, not understand it.
tried smart boot manager sbm.bin not floppy drive boot , not know how sort out partitioning or master boot record. know words , it.
think live cd has grub 1.98 on it.
