Tagged Text Workflow
my office uses indesign of publications, still use pagemaker create almanac , directory listings our trade publication. reason use pagemaker can take microsoft access database filled information , export information text. use ancient database program called paradox wrap different fields in database adobe pagemaker text tags, when place text files our pagemaker documents, styles automatically applied text bring in.
here comes question: there easy way in indesign? have done playing around tagged text features in indesign , seems little complex our staff , our automated workflow. in pagemaker styletags straigtforward , files didn't need leader information.
basically need tags apply paragraph styles, don't use object styles or character styles in our workflow.
i love off of pagemaker (and paradox, issue forum.)
i've looked @ keeping same styletags used in pagemaker , using type of grep expression apply of text between tags, couldn't seem work reliably either.
if has done similar or has pointers me going in right direction, it'd appreciated.
thanks in advance.
i've rebuilt 1 paradox workflow - years back, , think i've forgotten of traumatic details. if content in access now, kind of text exporting? xml export access can pretty messy, 1 time needed importable indesign, worked well. there kinds of potential hitches in such workflow, if data in access exceptionally clean, exported xml might straightforward enough flow id without significant effort. once built glossary way; took bunch of heavy lifting @ beginning, subsequent glossary updates easy felt guilty billing it.
if have (or can acquire) basic understanding of xml, take @ options under tag menu (under "utilities" in cs5 , 5.5). automagical formatting of large documents doable, depending on how database structured. if database xml export not structured in way makes kind of workflow easy, can use xsl rejigger xml format importable. unfortunately, know it's possible in cases - ability use xsl transforms @ "rank beginner" level of expertise.
