Thread: Installing on Mac partitions?

background: i'm new unbuntu/linux far installing , using on own computers, have quite bit of background formatting , partitioning drives.

can ubuntu installed on mac partition of intel mac, or not?

every time google question various phrasing end instructions use either standard unbuntu intallation, or use combination of refit! , bootcamp. have windows xp installation on mac, , both ways offer option use widows partition of mac drive, not mac partition. appears me ubuntu can installed on ntfs or fat formatted drive?

don't want use windows partition, since 1 computer have has far more space on mac formatted side. possible, , if so, why having such hard time finding how that's done?

additionally, have second mac exact same setup, neither partition has lot of room left. though, have 2 other drives on plenty of room. 1 mac formatted, , other ntfs. can find sorts of instructions on how create bootable usb drive, nothing on partitioning , installing on sata. @ least sure isn't easy find.

3 questions are:

1) possible install ubuntu on mac partition of intel mac?

2) can, , if how, install unbuntu on totally separate sata drive partition?

3) if above possible, can install on mac sata (mac os extended (journaled)) drive, , if so, how?

ordinarily, linux installs in own partitions, not on either mac or windows partitions. there way of installing ubuntu, known wubi, installs ubuntu file in windows partition. dont' know if wubi install windows on mac work, though.

usual way of installing linux mac has both os x , windows use os x partitioning tools shrink 1 or both of existing partitions , run ubuntu installer, has own tools creating linux partitions. there quite few guides online this, don't happen have urls handy, except my own, doesn't fit want do.

unfortunately, heading minefield. problem hybrid mbr partitioning system apple chose use enable windows , os x coexist on single disk. hybrid mbrs dangerous mess with, , it's entirely possible you'll break windows' ability boot installing linux. such problems can overcome, doing requires lot of knowledge. might want consider running ubuntu and/or windows in virtual machine inside os x rather deal complex partitioning , boot loader issues involved in triple-boot this.
