Thread: NTFS defrag under linux (or otherwise)
hi, trivial i'd share:
normal copy of files ntfs disk somewhere else (ie, disk), deleting files in disk, , copying files original disk, has effect of defragmenting filesystem quite lot.
tried 120gb usb disk formatted ntfs, i've been using , using daily since years, , never had defragmented . these figures before , after, according winxp defragmenting tool:
total fragmentation 32% --- 10%
files fragmentation 64% --- 21%
n of fragmented archives 99 --- 13
n of fragments in excess 3124 --- 971
defragmenting tool reported "defrag needed" before, , "not needed" after.
took noticeably less time defragging using win2 tool (as far can remember), thought may find interesting.

i had same idea few months ago, although didn't try under linux. had large partition (almost 240 gb) 80% full. contained kind of files kb - sized tiny files 7.4 gb isos , movies. there 4-5 large fragments part of iso , mkv movie.
having idea of possible time normal xp defragmenter take, decided transfer data external drive, , move back. moved of smaller files partition 50% empty space avoid fragmentation while copying back. after moving remaining files external drive, quick formatted partition guarantee of removing partition table entries left behind. had picture of 1 contiguous block of files in mind....
utter surprise, when moved files external drive, got aligned before - scattered on disk, same fragments of apparently same size , positions - if weren't moved @ all..!!
while still don't understand how xp handles these file-manipulations, thought @ moment - 'omg! should've done full- format'. unsure of success kind of weird behaviour , having lost lot of time, didn't try again. ended doing normal defragmentation (which ran overnight) compacted files had expected move , forth attempts.
hope can explain mystery xp/ntfs..
