module greyed out, edit state not permitted - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

in joomla 2.5.6 admin i'm in extensions->manage, looking @ latest users module. has padlock in status field, , line greyed out.

unsurprisingly when try enable "edit state not allowed".

what surprise me when click on options , examine "permissions", see super admin (to logged on) has configure, access, delete, edit inherited , allowed (although having padlock next them). changing access allowed has no effect, guessed.

my research points towards items requiring checking in, true, did , cleared cache no effect. looked @ permissions files have write access www-data (local test webserver).

in extension manager list, see (while logged on super admin) several modules un-greyed out have access, , several greyed out no access. example, feed display (administrator) has green tick enabled status. feed display (site) greyed out padlock. permissions on respective folders appear identical.

can suggest missing here please? im thinking it's fundamental permissions havent learned searching.

after hours have found answer own question! doesnt mean didnt google, or went straight forum, searched wrong thing.

i going delete post, (aside cant remove completely), in recognition of fact found similar questions out there, apparently without answer, thought id answer instead in case ever useful. besides, can answer own questions, else seems know more me!

so, extension in question protected extension, part of core of joomla , deliberately protected tampering! use module, , have appear in modules list rather under extensions->manage, create new 1 within modules menus. able use might expect. think key here is, on not finding module in module manager, need navigate extension manager (or withint new module menu) see extensions (modules) available, , in instance protected ones.

i hope im right this, invite additions/corrections not benefit, of me puzzled behaviour!
