Thread: Why hasn't VLC been made the default video player in ubuntu?

i'm new ubuntu user. after having lot of trouble getting totem play online video streams , dvds, started searching solutions. after reading other people's posts, installed vlc , can playing.

figure there reason vlc hasn't been made default video player despite popularity among ubuntu users. wondering reason is?

"ubuntu strives make software meets licensing terms in ubuntu license policy available. patent , copyright restrictions complicate free operating systems distributing software support proprietary formats.

ubuntu's commitment include free software default means proprietary media formats not configured 'out of box'.

ubuntu can play popular non-free media formats, including dvd, mp3, quicktime, windows media, , more following instructions below. if seems unnecessary work, remember ubuntu distribution of free software , these packages (at least arguably) affected patents , license restrictions in countries. avoid formats suppressed drm (digital rights management, or digital restrictions management), unplayable."
