Thread: Getting Bose USB speakers to work
after building new 64-bit system received bose companion5 sound system birthday
unfortunately got no sound out of them after setting them up, , when queried bose support said "the bose(r) companion(r) 5 speaker system not compatible linux operating system."
fortunately, there references on last few years various linux users getting sound out of same audio system. contacted motherboard makers thinking there problem onboard audio needing "sent" usb connector. try present process installing usb speakers on natty.
1) realize usb audio bypasses soundcard or onboard sound, , since processing occuring in external device, needs active , connected while booting. (i ran on windows xp laptop prior rebooting ubuntu computer make sure worked)
2)boot computer without speakers plugged stereo jack. (might not necessary)
3) run: cat /proc/asound/cards
should see primary sound card #0, , usb card may listed #1
4) take @ how alsa set up: cat /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
find usb sound module purposely turned off.
here indebted flavor of linux answer (which worked great under ubuntu) -- see directions given latux:
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/to...evice-in-alsa/
editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file superuser.
5) after rebooting able go directly system -> preferences -> sound select bose usb audio output without configuration steps latux mentions, , voila!![]()
for record, needed reboot (10.04 lucid).
long version: turned on bose companion 5 speakers & plugged them in usb port. went system / preferences / sound , clicked output , saw 1 device: "internal audio analog stereo". tried play something, no sound. rebooted , went system / preferences / sound , output again , voila! there option bose usb audio analog surround 4.1.
