Thread: Installing Nvidia drivers kills Ubuntu
hi everybody, hope can help.
3 times far have had re-install ubuntu because installed updated or new nvidia graphics driver geforce fx 5200
first time, using natty narwhal, installed updated graphics driver, , upon reboot, presented blank screen did nothing. being first-time ubuntu user, assumed me, or bug in new release.
burnt lucid lynx cd on pc, , installed instead. same problem when installed new graphics driver, again via admin>>hardware drivers. reboot yielded blank screen.
booted cd again, had no files yet worry about, , seemed fine, providing stayed away tempting hardware drivers button.
accidentally installed new driver when installing dependencies(via terminal) ogre (object-oriented graphics rendering engine) time, terminal froze, firefox wouldn't boot, , reboot yielded blinking, blank login screen did not anything.
obviously, i'd have graphics driver, can't run needs 3d acceleration (games, 3d simulations, desktop effects), it's not absolutely necessary. if nobody can suggest fix, short of new computer, new graphics card etc, can suggest way can stop myself accidentally installing driver-ish?
driver worked fine on windowsxp, there's 2 reasons i'm not going that:
a) hate it. hate, hate, hate.
b) i've lost activation key came computer, can't reinstall.
further detail can provided on request.
computer dell dimension 2400, 256mb ram, hard drive empty. old , slow, it.
if can me @ all, have eternal gratitude![]()
