Thread: Slow speed on home network, fast on others ...

hi all,

wireless card:

code:
*-network description: wireless interface product: rtl8191sevb wireless lan controller vendor: realtek semiconductor co., ltd. physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0 logical name: wlan0 version: 10 serial: b4:82:fe:3c:ad:72 width: 32 bits clock: 33mhz capabilities: bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes driver=rtl819xse driverversion=0019.1207.2010 firmware=63 ip=192.168.0.60 latency=0 multicast=yes wireless=802.11bg resources: irq:17 ioport:2000(size=256) memory:d4000000-d4003fff
computer: toshiba satellite pro l510 laptop.

issues: wrangled laptop's internet speed issue few months ago gave when failed. in nutshell, 3 machines on our home lan speeds of 10+mbps while toshiba, modern (and might problem!), achieves 1mbps tops; around 0.4-0.7.

regardless tried - , included installing 32bit ubuntu after realtek advised me driver 32bit , results unpredicatble on 64bit - nothing has changed.

wireless signal strength on network icon unpredictably slips 50% few seconds 100%. when right click network icon , 'edit connections' , go 'wireless', other 3 networks have used (and use rarely) show when last used them correctly. home network shows 'last used = never' , has.

have outlined above same 10.04 lts , 10.10 using either xfce or gnome. identical results. have deleted home network , re-created it, tried wicd instead of network manager; these things don't fix , don't seem issue. ethernet cable plugged same install gives 10+mbps, same other 3 machines. wireless on toshiba gives issue.

the plot thickens: went see in-laws. after getting on lan , computing awhile, had idea check speed. 4mbps! correct! few days later went somewhere else , connected network. same result. speed test matched network speed.

on both occasions wireless signal strength icon rock solid, no jumps 50%.

home, 0.7mbps. so, i'm guessing not card or driver; capable of achieving better speeds.

ideas: perhaps there's setting on router wrong laptop (remembering other 3 getting 10mbsp +), or setting on laptop wrong router. (or both!)

have modem wired router wireless router daisy-chained wired router. static ips , wired gateway ip on 4 computers (three of wireless). i'm thinking maybe killing wired router, modem directly wireless , using 1 router may make job easier.

start digging if join me or has clues ...

well, far ...

code:
binky@tosher:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart * reconfiguring network interfaces... postconf: fatal: open /etc/postfix/main.cf: no such file or directory postconf: fatal: open /etc/postfix/main.cf: no such file or directory
... on 10.10.

checked out routers looks fine. pretty straightforward unless i've overlooked ...
