Blending modes won't work with gradients?

hi!

 

 

i'm working in cs3 , trying out different tutorials on how create realistic water drops , bubbles, such as

but when fill shape gradient , change blend mode screen, entire object goes white (i did put darker shape background behind gradient show)

 

 

does know why is?

change black in gradient 100k 100 cmyk, if designing print.

 

if desigining digitnal: file >> document color mode >> rgb

 

screen: multiplies inverse of underlying colors. resulting color lighter color.
