Defining Diagonal Bars in a Rectangle in Illustrator

hi everyone, in illustrator how make shape points go point pint within shape?

for example, making flags, when flag has diagonal bar such scotland , jamaica, width of bar defined flat or laying horizontal , set diagonally across flag, it's centre across centre of flag [rectangle] , it's ends centred on corners.

how define horizontal bar width (when flat) , define centred along diagonal of shape , it's length defined corners of rectangle?

any appreciated

gareth

ps. have done example of trying here in exact square. can done in exact square because make bar 45º, doing way points @ centre of white bar (which have put there myself in middle) still not @ corner points of rectangle, length of diagonal bar not defined.

gareth,

you may (smart guides friends):

1) create straight path, stroke weight equalling width of bar, close being corner corner, direct selection tool drag endpoints coincide corner anchor points,

2) object>path>outline stroke,

3) create copy of background rectangle (ctrl/cmd+f),

4) select 2) , 3) , pathfinder>intersect shape areas (or whatever called in version result in overlap between shapes, may need press alt/option make simple path).

to create crossing bar may:

5) select 4) , object>transform>reflect copy (vertically or horizontally).
