Add canvas to a cropped smart object

hello,

 

using ps6 64 bit.

 

i bring in image smart object, crop (with 'delete cropped pixels' checked) , attempt add canvas on sides.

the image reverts pre-cropped size added canvas on 3 sides.

 

if flatten smart object before adding canvas, works fine.

 

is there way work smart object?

in clipped state add vector mask (select all, make work path) so.
