Spurious "1" at top of articles - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

all articles (home, products/*, history) have spurious "1" after title , before article content. being output right after <div class="article-header">.

the "1" not in article editor or article content in table. not disappear when turn titles on or off. still there when switch atomic. article options set hide/no except title, , title set hide home page article.

it started can't pin down might have changed. file timestamps @ least week before noticed this.

i think controls article display:
/components/com_content/views/article/tmpl/default.php
and has no changes since install.

any help? idea on dig code?
