Thread: Ubuntu 10.04 installation went horribly wrong
hello !
have 250 gb hard drive , 6 ntfs partitions: "local disk" (c), "movies" (d), "music" (e), "photos" (f), "applications" (g) , "documents" (h).
had windows 7 installed on c , today wanted replace windows ubuntu 10.04. since don't keep pretty important data on c, transferred needed h. now, booted ubuntu usb stick, went ubuntu live and, after checking , rechecking , rechecking make sure doing right thing, formatted drive c (64 gb) fat. went fine, drive formatted , of other drives unharmed.
ran ubuntu installer , when got point asked want install os, selected last option (advanced / customized - that). 2 options displayed: primary drive (~64 gb fat) , logical drive (~180 gb ntfs). selected 64 gb fat drive, rechecking make sure right disk drive. asked me whether wanted format 64 gb fat drive ext4. since know linux-specific file system, selected yes.
installation went fine, when rebooted computer saw that, except "music", of other ntfs drives missing. instead, "music" drive's size ~180 gb. see data "music" drive, none other partitions. strangely, drive mounted before running installer - don't know if might reason it's ntfs drive able access or not.
after research made on forums, found out "testdisk" program. analyzed disk , didn't find ntfs drives. did "deeper search" , after half hour or so, found partitions. there ! pressed p key , see directories , files.
now, problem this: when mark ext4 drive primary , ntfs drives logical, says it's bad structure. can fix this? i'm afraid might lose data. i've done other installations in past, none went wrong one.if mark them primary, work?
please !
mihai
welcome uf.
wouldn't recommend marking them primary. can have 4 primary partitions on mbr partitioned disc.
can leave recovered partitions (ie not change partition type)?
