Thread: Wanting to learn more about networks by setting up my own.


hello,

title suggests looking building small network in home. aware want can done using router intention build entire thing ground up.

want create full network has wireless , wired functionality , can connect 2 laptops (wireless) desktop, file server , xbox (possibly wireless).

understand it, (without using router) need adsl modem, small , low powered machine act firewall, dhcp server , port forwarding (i want fileserver visible internet, securely) switch , wireless bridge.

want know if correct. there better way this? have missed anything?

that should pretty it.

if want go "all in" might able work around wireless bridge installing wireless nic in 1 of permanent machines on network (the "low powered" or desktop) , bridge nic wired nic, extending wired network (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ne...nnectionbridge).

or build 2 "subnets" (one wired , 1 wireless) , use "low powered" machine (router) move traffic between 2 (if have 2 wired , 1 wireless nic installed in it).
