Thread: Can't connect to .local hosts / websites on company network (DNS issue)
problem:
company network has internal hosts / websites names end in .local, e.g. http://intranet.new-york.local/
freshly installed ubuntu machine works fine on network, has internet access, etc. cannot connect these particular systems.
testing dns tools dig / nslookup works fine, normal name resolution ping / telnet / browsers not work.
solution:
1. open terminal window
2. enter command sudo nano /etc/nsswitch.conf
3. change following line:
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [notfound=return] dns mdns4
this:
hosts: files dns
4. press ctrl-x, y, enter save
explanation:
ubuntu ships configured name lookups self-configuring networks, based on appletalk / mdns / bonjour protocol. in configuration shipped resolver, protocol considered final aurhority ".local" top level domain, , dns not checked. above configuration change eliminates , restricts lookups (a) /etc/hosts file, followed (b) dns
fwiw (for it's worth) - it's idea make backup copy of config file before editing it. can delete if don't need - or rename if (need it).
