Thread: Nvidia FX 5500 - instant kernel panic

i had card installed before legacy drivers in synaptic , didn't freak out , cause kernel panics until installed virtualbox. in complete frustration after multiple attempts fix gave up. i'm doing clean install of 10.04 lts , i'd try 1 more time working.

installed card in box, , booted up. kernel panic instant , can't see screen enough anything. had read in several places issue newer nvidia drivers. have old drivers nvidia (nvidia-linux-x86-169.07-pkg1.run), how can install them?

thanks,

mystmaiden

looks have hard nvidia way..

nvidia driver contains docs & nvidia driver downloads has driver readme of 40 pages.

need:
1. build-essential tools
2. linux kernel headers package matches kernel version (uname -r)

if running 64 bit & want 32bit compatible gl libs wine etc there 32 bit build library 64 bit boxes (ia32-libs)
3. ia32-libs

next:
console login or switch console 1 & stop gdm
<ctrl>+<alt>+<f1>
login
[sudo] service gdm stop
cd path of nvidia driver.run file..
cd ~/downloads
[sudo] sh ./nvidia---blah--.run
(use <tab> key auto complete cmd)

follow prompts & error messages..

[sudo] service gdm start

[] indicate need sudo permissions.
