Need some help discerning why this is so slow...and how to fix it...

i'm looking comments , input on why lr 4 running me. have theories, absolutely not spend money on hardware upgrades until figure out which hardware upgrades me most.

here's what's going on. i'm running 2010 macbook pro 13" 2.4ghz core 2 duo processor, 4gb ram (stock) , 250gb, 5400 rpm hdd. internal hard drive has around 30gb free @ given time. shoot entirely raw. now, how work create catalog on local drive, work on shoot there , offload (import) master catalog of under hundred thousand photos. master catalog, preview , digital negatives live on same 640gb, 5400 rpm external drive, connected via usb 2.

having been shooting lot lately, driving me wall how slow lr running once go small catalog on local drive master catalog on external. though editing works fine, grid view deathly slow, slow work productively (i work through old stuff time). got me thinking it's got 1 of 3 things: usb 2 connection, 5400 rpm drive or computer itself. after looking online @ options pertaining these 3 potential bottlenecks, decided try experiment. copied 1.24gb catalog file local drive in computer. once opened it, more usable far speed concerned. substantially faster. automatically mean usb 2 biggest bottleneck? oh , did perform optimization, further improved performance small margin. don't know if grid view zippier. granted, few dozen preview rendered (i don't want copy 100gb previews file right now, no space locally), thing sure fast.

this brings me next point: upgrades. until planning on going external 7200 rpm drive photos + catalog + previews, i'm thinking external hdd photos only, while catalog , preview reside solely on 128gb crucial m4 ssd. feel alone make things faster if utilize fw800 conneciton on laptop. it? or having things on internal drive fastest of all? secondly, upgrading more recent laptop sometime in near future. love go conveniently small 11" macbook air, , i'm more new models outperform current system long shot. either way, either host catalog , preview on external ssd connected via usb3 or internally, , photos reside on external 7200 rpm hdd connected via usb3.

comments, tips , suggestions apprecaited!

that right there big clue...usb 2 slow relying on disk i/o (which pretty lightroom does) means major contributor slowness.
