Thread: How to deactivate root account but allow software to run as rool?

i'm setting server on cloud server hosting service. when installed ubuntu 10.04, set "root" access. meaning created account called "root" , gave password log in.

of course, created admin (sudo) accounts myself , other administrator. however, being familiar installing 8.04 lts server on our own hardware, , set without root, don't quite know how rid of 'root' login, yet preserve ability our scripts , software still run root permissions.

can please provide steps or link thread has these steps?

thanks.

you don't create a root account. root user there. uid 0. see root account try cli
code:
getent passwd|grep root
see group root try this
code:
getent group|grep root
access account obscured unknown password. rest assured account there. if concerned can change root password. use 12 characters or more prevent guessing. don't have remember if have sudo set correctly , understand how change root password using sudo. on other hand if multiple users have sudo rights should think of limiting kinds of commands these folks can execute sudo root rights (e.g passwd command).

sudo configuration tutorials insight.

if 1 know root password there no real problem long password strong enough uncrackable.
