Thread: Making Ubuntu partition bootable

base system dell inspiron 1525 vista.

installed 9.04 dual boot. ubuntu , swap partitions in extended partition. did upgrade 10.04. booted routinely 10.04 , user files in /home on 10.04 partition. still saw volume had 9.04 there nothing of value there. using disk utility, deleted volume free space. however, system no longer boot.

downloaded supergrub , used boot vista. downloaded easybcd wasn't able restore booting vista. downloaded vista recovery disk , restored booting windows.

in vista, used easybcd add second boot option, boot ubuntu. used option specify partition boot, identified ubuntu 10.04.

when boot vista, fine. however, if choose ubuntu in vista boot manager, screen goes blank , nothing happens. suppose there missing in 10.04 partition (grub, grub2?) needed allow ubuntu boot. right? tried function activate partition in supergrub, didn't work. there reference starting grub , using command line make partition bootable, haven't been able discover how it.

can boot live ubuntu cd, mount ubuntu partition, chroot in, , reinstall grub?

this guide should help.
