Thread: nvidia Drivers Installation Help

i know ubuntu can automatically download , install drivers, downloaded driver file nvidia site @ university save usage @ home. tried running file, , following error:
"could not open file /media/the bigdaddy/linu…inux-x86_64-275.09.07.run

gedit has not been able detect character encoding.
please check not trying open binary file.
select character encoding menu , try again."

tried selecting 1 of encodings displayed in menu, same error?
how install update without having download again?

oh , forgot, nvidia driver i'm trying install is: nvidia-linux-x86_64-275.09.07.run

one defining difference between ubuntu linux & windows package management.

not file until read & understand..

file have downloaded executable script.
can run setting execute bit or
sh ./script_name
nvidia installer needs sudo privileges & x server stopped/not loaded.
i'm not going explain how-to use nvidia driver.

install method outside ubuntu package management, there dependencies required not have.
not self contained windows program, must built against kernel.
install break every kernel update.

strong suggest obtain nvidia driver thru' ubuntu package management.
if need latest driver version need add ppa package manager.
