Thread: Updater doesn't work?

i installed latest 32 bit ubuntu on new netbook , when trying update message:

could not initialize package information

unresolvable problem occurred while initializing package information.

please report bug against 'update-manager' package , include following error message:

'e:encountered section no package: header, e:problem mergelist /var/lib/apt/lists/extras.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-i386_packages, e:the package lists or status file not parsed or opened.'

i don't have idea means or how fix it, assume if updater doesn't work can't fix itself. there can this...? online entirely through public wifi don't want updates behind.

also, can't software thing work, select programs install. seems them never finish looking , display any...

can open terminal (applications > accessories > terminal) , use these commands

code:

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf  sudo apt-get update

the first command ask password,but not echo type in.
delete files in /var/lib/apt/lists , reload them download server second command.
