Wedding photography running out of space. Need help with thousands of photos, and workflow
so studio wedding photography. me , partner both take photos. have 30,000 photos last 2 years. running out of space big time. both have 1 terabyte magnetic hard drives in our computers. have 80gb left , has 120gb left. needless say, since myself take 50gb of photos per wedding, i'm not going last long. use lightroom.
so far have managed backup on external 2tb hard drive both of us. save both raw , jpegs it. have backed on online server. here's first issue. i've been doing, previous year (completed weddings) delete raws computers. leave jpeg's on computer incase need them quickly. keep raws on external hard drives , online. doing this, deleting raws completed weddings off internal hard drives, i'm still out of space. computer slow because of though it's top of line computer 6 gigs of triple channel ram. lightroom runs slow , lags bad.
so first question is: by deleting raws off of computer, if need go few years , re-save raw files or re-edit, lightroom remember develop settings or have re-edit every photo? have been saving catalog file each year, , start new 1 every year. not use xmp sidecar files save lightroom database. long have catalog file backed up, safe? or doing wrong? because if open old catalog file, photos not found on computer (obviously).
my second question is: i going investing in more hard drives , want right time around. want invest in ssd drives maximum performance. here plan is. 1 ssd drive windows/programs, 1 ssd drive lightroom scratch disk, , 1 1tb "velociraptor" 10,000rpm magnetic hard drive keeping actual images on. not right? planning out wrong?
here our current workflow. welcome suggestions:
1) shoot wedding.
2) import raw files cf card computer. goes in folder client images going different sub folders category such "reception" , "ceremony"
3) import folder lightroom4.
4) edit photos. not use xmp sidecar, use database.
5) export files in jpeg form same client folder.
6) @ end of year save catalog, make new catalog new year. delete raw files off of hard drive after backing them on 2tb external hard drive. leave jpegs , client's folder on computer hard drive.
with regards question 1 ... if restore photo exact proper location, , still have catalog, shouldn't need re-edit photo.
with regards workflow ... there no reason why new photos have go on (nearly full) internal drive. suggest consider workflow new photos go directly onto external drive, , stay there. in fact, if have enough external drives, move of existing photos external drives, , not have delete photos @ all, described in question 1.
