Cannot watch video

i cannot watch video of kind, in preview window, main editing window, or anywhere else. i'm using windows vista minimum cpu power, enough else. rest of program runs smoothly, can't edit video or without seeing it. please help. tried multiple projects, video format options, restarting computer. got program yesterday.
