New to the Adjustment Brush Tool...HELP!

hello!  new lightroom, , adjustment brush tool specifically, , having problems it!  have watched tons of tutorials on using it, , seems relatively easy...although when go program , attempt use it, nothing happens photo...say if wanted adjust exposure on face of individual, go in , select tool, decrease exposure, make brush , feather size want it, , when go "paint" area want altered, nothing happens?  pins appear if show me that's started, no change happens area attempted paint.  need select somewhere able use brush paint?  appreciated!!  thank you!!   

first, verify have painted something. @ bottom option says "show selected mask overlay", enable this. show area have painted far.

 

if see pink appear, have painted far. try changing adjustments more drastically (i.e. move sliders way 1 direction or another). if see effect appear, dial things until have want.

 

if not see pink appear, make sure flow , density sliders up. act opacity, if low, aren't laying down "paint" brush.
