firstly, may work if ...

the output "lspci" command typed in terminal gave me list of lines of output, including line, got me going in right direction:
code:
04:00.0 network controller: intersil corporation isl3886 [prism javelin/prism xbow] (rev 01)
i'm using ubuntu 10.04 lts lucid lynx, way, since don't intend update old system every 6 months.

word of wary puppy 512.

card works out of box wary puppy, installed on gateway solo 5350 laptop. led me believe there must solution ubuntu well.

ndiswrapper did not help!

of course, went right there, using link above windows drivers. didn't work @ all. easy add ndiswrapper ubuntu software center though, , remove when figured out didn't need it! can found in "applications" menu, on left of top "panel" on screen, default, if you're new ubuntu.

finally, it's firmware issue:

wonderful work on page, found firmware files needed make work:

http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/p54

had was:

1) use link on page download file listed "pci / pcmcia isl3886pci", in section "for 2.6.29 kernels , above".

2) file saved in download folder "2.13.25.0.arm". renamed "isl3886pci", match result "lspci" command above. note did not leave file extension ".arm".

3) opened terminal (from applications menu, if you're new ubuntu , linux) , typed
code:
gksudo nautilus
gave me root privileges copy file, using nautilus file manager, user's download folder system folder:

/lib/firmware

folder read only, , cannot edit files, rename them or copy new ones location. "gksudo" command allows temporary root access nautilus.

4) reboot, , you're done. since had different wireless pc card on laptop, did work, wpa password wireless network still in memory, , wireless connected 2wire card, without doing else @ all.

updates!

i'll update post, or thread, if it's useful else, or if there missing information me add.

you might post:
code:
lspci -nn
the pci.id couplet used search. firmware available in package linux-firmware-nonfree. no renaming or moving needed, installs it's needed.
