Thread: Act upon the existence of a new file?

i have cron job running act upon files if exist in folder... problem nature of new files. new files aren't put there often, server isn't used (most of time) not check every minute see if new file there , allow disks spin down , go sleep. however, when new file exist there, needs acted upon asap.

i'm handling cron job... works... work better ability act upon event of new file being present. there way trigger action upon new file system activity in path? or keep doing i'm doing , have system check time , keep disks awake in case shows up?
