ran du -k in root, output large. there specific part of output should looking at, or should run different directory?

i've come conclusion root partition full, i'm not sure how clear space, or how clear once work out how it. removed few packages apt, doesn't seem have effect. df -h shows root 100% full, yet has 3gb free. i've grown comfortable ubuntu in couple years i've been using it, yet level of problem-solving bit nerve-wracking me. i've been considering reinstalling (this machine running lucid upgraded karmic , jaunty , has few oddities), hate idea of being forced reinstall because can't overcome problem. i'd appreciate input folks can give me on this. if need other information or outputs terminal commands, i'm happy provide it.

can post output of
code:
cd / du -h --max-depth=1 2>/dev/null | sort -h
