Thread: Refuses to acknowledge new FX card if first one is in
okay, background: built computer myself year ago. bought mid-range nvidia graphics card. fx card's fan noisy, 6 months ago, removed fan. have awesome fans in case, , thought they'd sufficient cool it. turns out wrong, , week ago, monitors went dark. when opened case investigate, fx card searing hot. turns out had been running in red these past 6 months. not good. gave fx card chance cool, put in, turned computer on, , came back, figure it's beginning of end.
bought new graphics card. different model, still nvidia. problem old card's not dead yet, , stubbornly want keep until dies, either run third monitor or cuda computation.
put second card in , transfer monitor hookups new card, boot computer... , nothing appears on screen. plug in third monitor old card, and, 1 expect, it's recognizing old one. that's fine. run nvidia x server settings , enable monitors on new card. problem wants monitor attached old card "primary."
yank out old card , try coax computer accept new one. after fiddling around, works.
plug in old card.
now, refuses acknowledge existence of new card. way computer recognize new card take out old one.
know of way cure computer of unhealthy fixation on old, dying card while still utilizing it? i'd think should need poke around xorg.conf, haven't been having best of luck that.
system-specifics:
- ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit)
- running latest nvidia binary drivers
- the old card gts 240. new 1 gt 430
oh, here's xorg.conf file when have new card in, , everything's configured:
