Thread: My computer freezes and take around 5 minutes to start.

running 10.04

bios part seems go fine hangs on ubuntu splash screen. it's not stuck because dots moving. takes forever load. started yesterday , today seems worse.

on top of lock no apparent reason. stop accepting keyboard , mouse clicks can still move cursor. no apparent reason mean happens @ random. system under load , it's not. lock right , have open pidgin , firefox. oddly it's never locked when i'm playing minecraft difficult computer handle.

i'm @ loss , stressed out think logically. don't know if should looking @ hardware or software.

if press f1 during boot (or maybe ctrl+alt+f1) should able see messages scroll ubuntu loads, rather splash screen. things may go fast though.

boot log can accessed using dmesg command in terminal. these messages appended /var/log/messages there too.

in terminal do:

dmesg

and paste contents here. if wanted place in text file on desktop

dmesg > ~/desktop/boot_messages

there's program can install called bootlog, or daemon, bootlogd. monitor startup , create bar chart of how long each process takes. useful identifying how long things taking, or things hanging. think logs stored in /var/log/bootchart/
