Thread: clone windows 7 and run it in virtualbox

hi

have win 7 preinstalled und ubuntu 11.04

clone windows 7 partition , run in virtualbox,
don't have restart laptop every time need windows.

possible?

i've never tried it, believe possible. whether work question, because windows need different drivers access peripheral devices.

need sufficient ram able run windows @ same time os, because windows requires lot of ram.

recommend uninstall default virtualbox (vb) , install latest version virtualbox downloads (scroll down debian-based linux distributions); install virtualbox extension pack (available main vb downloads page).

here how it:

1. start vb. create virtual machine (vm) virtual disk slightly larger than existing windows partition.
2. download iso clonezilla.
3. start new vm; starts, shows oracle vb logo. press f12 presents text menu.
4. from vb menu (not text menu), select devices > cd/dvd devices > choose virtual cd/dvd disk file > select clonezilla iso.
5. from text menu, select c choose cd-rom.
6. clonezilla load vm.
7. clone real windows partition virtual disk.
   
   • ensure clone right way around, otherwise trash real windows partition.
   
   
8. i believe have rebuild mbr (the boot record) of vm, can use easybcd, otherwise vm try boot (unsuccessfully) real windows.

say, have never tried this, cannot guarantee work. may find easier install windows vm , copy settings across.

if work, can install guest additions (devices > install guest additions) vm.
