Thread: Having difficulty with the dd and mount commands


hi,

situation i'm trying use desktop computer no o/s installed plug in these ide hard drives , image drive data off of them. thought run ubuntu 10.04 lts live , use command line execute dd command; , store image on external usb drive. usb drive not automounted , when in "/media" empty. i'm not sure think in order need mount drive.

i've looked @ man page several times , online article gives examples of command. , i've tried several things. when use -t option i'm not sure i'm supposed put in there. i've tried "fat" "fat16" "usb" , "lacie" (lacie name of usb drive. i've tried without -t option so:

mount /dev/sdb1 /media
and so:

mount /dev/sdb /media
and so:

mount /dev/hdb /media
and 3 i'm told:

mount: special device /dev/<whatever had put here> not exist
i wonder if hard drive i'm trying image mounted , if need umount before i'll able use dd.

can help?

did these things while logged in (superuser?)(root?)

(note leter 'l' not number 1)
