Thread: Root Password and Samba

i have installed ubuntu server v11.04. did same thing did other server v9.xx when installed it. never asks me root password account name , password user account. when try edit samba.conf file not allow me until put in root password seems catch-22.

this version not allow me “shutdown now” unless have root password not able configuration server 9.xx.

what can do?

thanks can provide me.
sincerely,
al valente

sudo used raise commands privilege of root in ubuntu. password used sudo user account password. rootsudo link in sig explain setup in ubuntu, root account locked default.

in case commands
code:
gksudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf
if gedit text editor, nano substituted there (use plain "sudo" nano - see edit @ bottom).
and
code:
sudo shutdown now
and put in user password (the user have sudo use original account set on install, further accounts aren't in sudoers file automatically)

if need lot of work root preferred method here open terminal , use
code:
sudo -i
root shell , put commands in normal.

edit:
if have desktop installed use gksudo or gksu graphical applications, why changed first code gedit, nano terminal or cli application only, plain sudo fine use. once again rootsudo link in sig explain more fully, graphical sudo section down page bit.
