Merging text and making it transparent - how is it done please?

hello all,

 

     quite simple answer eludes me. want create borderless coloured rectangle (which can do!), drag text on , cut text out leaves original rectangle transparent text if know mean.

 

i can in ps magic lasso lose quality when re-importing ai.

 

if can shed light appreciated.

use transparancy pallet shown here:

select block , text

from menu of  transparancy pallet, choose make opacity mask

if checked, uncheck clip , invert mask.
