Thread: Problem installing Ubuntu 11.04 with BIOS RAID5 via Asus Crosshair III motherboard

hi everyone, first time installing ubuntu in raid system. , have learned of these motherboard based / bios raid systems not true raid setups.

have 4 wd 640gb hdds (/dev/sda-sdd) setup in raid5 , external 1.5tb hdd (/dev/sdf).

have windows 7 running on raid5 partition no problems. scaled partition size down 200 gb reserve ubuntu installation. unfortunatly, ubuntu not appear recognizing raid5 configuration show 5 drives single ntfs partition on external drive.

have tried installing using both wubi , regular installation (usb memory stick).

wubi:
looks installs correctly in windows 7 , when reboot bootloader windows 7 , ubuntu boot options. when choose ubuntu starts loading stops error can not locate installation.iso , halts.

standard installation usb memory stick:
installation program loads fine when step setup file system lists 5 hard drives partition finds 1.5gb ntfs partition on external drive. doesn't recognize on raid5 setup.
side note, before installation built in raid controller/bios/whatever detects raid5 setup. should , running.

anyway....does have suggestions on either approach? being able access data on raid5 partition not important me tempted install ubuntu on usb drive , plug in when need development work. doesn't me using ubuntu primary desktop.

thoughts?

thanks,
chris

well, i'm not going mark solved. , running ubuntu 11.04 installed on external usb drive. not optimal solution since bios functioning boot loader changing boot order.

chris
