Blur background layer without creating "halo" around subject

i have picture of baseball player grandstands , spectators in background. focus attention on subject, want blur , darken player (subject).

so duplicated background layer , created mask on player. selected background layer, added lens blur, , darkened it.

the problem step blurs image of subject in background, causing extend out beyond masked image of subject on foreground layer, creating ghostly "halo" effect.

i've tried creating inverted mask on background layer, doesn't work. have suggestions?

thanks.

photoshop ps6, windows 7

you want isolated player above blurred background.

so, want inverse of mask on top layer, , bottom layer blurred original image.

or have used selection of background around player , apply blur through selection.
