Thread: Removed video card to switch to onboard video, now cannot start kdm

hi all,

got bit of problem xorg can't start kdm. pulled out dying agp card try , switch onboard video, , think previous configuration gumming works.

i've been running system quite while, you'll able tell version numbers. here's system configuration:

ati all-in-wonder radeon 9000 <-- having problems, removed it
32-bit amd athlon 2400+ or (old single-core athlon)
onboard vga via vt8378
kubuntu 8.04.1 (lol)

onboard video, here's lspci:
vga compatible controller: via technologies, inc. vt8378 [s3 unichrome] integrated video (rev 01)

this did:
system mp3 jukebox console plays music , runs samba / apache, why everything's old... never needed mess it.

radeon fan failed on 2 years ago, , since card has been hot enough cook on, has kept running. recently, power outage killed monitor attached (of things) , had new screen. well, old screen square, , can't buy widescreen now. had trouble getting radeon choose widescreen resolution, decided time remove it. there other issues anyway, power save never turning off backlight.

so, removed ati agp video card, switch onboard video. did shut down, yank card, plug vga cable onboard video , reboot.

so far, not working:
after reboot, kdm-kde4 can't start. tries start goes text-only cli. seems finds widescreen video modes after ends spitting error logs:

code:
(ii) vesa(0): searching matching vesa mode(s): (ii) vesa(0): total memory: 1024 64kb banks (65536kb) (ee) vesa(0): no matching modes (ii) unloadmodule: "vesa" (ii) unloadmodule: "int10" (ii) unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libint10.so (ii) unloadmodule: "vbe" (ii) unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libvbe.so (ee) screen(s) found, none have usable configuration. fatal server error: no screens found

what i've tried far, root of course, , not in order:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

/etc/init.d/kdm-kde4 stop
/etc/init.d/kdm-kde4 start

dpkg-reconfigure sent me through text-mode pseudo-menu thingy defined keyboard layout , nonsense, , left system in same state.

poked around on google , info find irrelevant, related horrible manual-install nvidia drivers in ubuntu 7 days.

what want do:

i'm after widescreen resolutions , power-save working on new screen. can pop ati card in, it's on last legs , i'd happy lose wattage. power save issue has been there while, ati card did not suspend screen. sent faint stripes of gray instead of blank screen , backlight stayed on forever.

obviously, not keen on buying replacement agp card.

avoid having transport amarok databases new server. make heavy use of song ratings , whenever try transport database old system fresh build have spend hours relearning sql commands.

ideas how either fix resolutions on ati or (preferably) kde start on onboard graphics?

pop ati card , go konsole, , type

sudo apt-get remove --purge xorg-driver-fglrx fglrx*

reboot system ati card still in system, when desktop, shut computer down , remove card, turn system on , see if kdm, if drops terminal,

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

when has run it's course, reboot system typing

sudo shutdown -r

if fails, reinstall kubuntu disk.
