PGI-5 BK not being used?

hi everyone.

i'm printing id cs4 canon pixma mp830 inkjet. after printing more dozen 42-page documents, noticed 1 of 2 black cartridges, larger pgi-5 bk, not decreasing in resevoir. meanwhile, smaller black cli-8 bk being consumed.

is because print profile rgb instead of cmyk - or reason?

i have canon color/intensity preferences set manual>auto (not photo, graphic, or none). have media type set photo paper plus double sided & using hp brochure glossy paper, 48 lb. document contains both hi-res photos , graphics.

thanks helping out. it's killing me not seeing economical of cartidges being consumed. 1 little tricky me figure out , can't seem find canon forum question.

paul
