hello all, new forum , ubuntu/linux.

have been brought on windows os , got fed of , wanted different downloaded , installed copy of ubuntu 11.04 on freshly built computer. have had around os general feel of , looked through posts on here try , learn bit also.

since installing have come across few problems have searched on here haven’t managed solve issues. main problem have had not being able change resolution suitable, , upon opening xorg.conf via terminal opens blank , can’t edit @ all.

workstation spec follows:
mobo : asus p5g41t-m
cpu : intel celeron e3400 2.6ghz
ram : 2gb ddr3 1066mhz
hdd : samsung f3 500gb sata ii 7200rpm 16mb cache
drive : dvd-rw not sure make/model

monitor: panasonic tx-26lmd70d 26” hd tv

connected pc tv hdmi cable onboard hmdi port. problem got desktop image displaying larger tv screen see part of bar @ top , bottom able around. after while came think maybe it’s tv, couldn’t change there improve it. thought try normal vga cable see if different, was. can see entire desktop @ wrong resolution , can’t change it. want use computer media centre view hd content don’t have clue how round problem. did think getting dedicated graphics card don’t want spend money if don’t have too.

thinking maybe driver issue on going restricted drivers didn't bring @ loss.

appreciated.
don’t hesitate ask me questions if not clear post.

on 2 lcd tvs connected system to, more tv needs adjustment. 1 toshiba 40", , other samsung 32" had set tv scan. setting available through tv remote, should picture size.
